saying yes

"where you invest your love, you invest your life"
- mumford and sons
When you take away all the nonsense and white noise of the largely commercially driven holiday Valentines Day, it's actually a wonderful opportunity to sit with yourself and reflect. What do you love about your life? Not just who, but what? What are you subscribing to emotionally and in simpler terms what are you saying 'yes' to?  Everyone's saying yes to something, whether you're cognizant of that or not, we all state our own value by what and who we say 'yes' to. The type of quality experience we are engaging in daily directly determines how we will feel about our own life and in essence how we feel about ourselves.
This was the first Valentines Day that I have been single in probably 9 years. Let me tell you I was prepared for it to be a DOOZY. Filled with enough chocolate goods to put me in a severe sugar coma, boxes of Kleenex and quite frankly booze drenched {okay fine, honest time, it was a little booze drenched towards the end of the day}. Instead I spent the morning in my new apartment alone and looking at what I have left after such a transformative 6 months.
I sat down and looked at it all, the good, the bad, the ugly and the down right surprising. As self indulgent as this sounds what I was left with was an overwhelming feeling of gratitude.  Not only did I survive the greatest heartbreak I've ever known, but I might just be better off because of it.  I now have a greater understanding of the type of quality experiences that I want for my life.  Every new day brings with it the ability for me to redefine what I want my world to look like, all simply by what I say 'yes' to.
So in honor of that, I'm going to start one day per week on my blog dedicated to saying yes. After all, how do you know what to give the nod of approval to if you don't know what you want your life to look like? When you can define what it is that you want, all of the things, people and nonsense falls away, as there's no room for it when you're standing so strongly within your own integrity.
So, my beautifully, supportive, dear readers, that's what I'm asking you to be aware of today. Take two minutes to remove all of the 'white noise' and examine your life. What are you saying 'yes' to and more importantly do you want to be saying 'yes' to it?
These amazing images are from the uber talented photographer Jennifer Causey and I'm saying yes to all of it!

  1. Lovely. A few years ago I declared it my year of saying yes and it was a wonderful year full of new and exciting things and people. I was so exhausted that I declared the following year my year of allowing myself to say no. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said what do you want to say yes to, I should have been more keened in on that part. Still, I'm with you on this one :)

  2. I'm saying yes to slowing down. Life can't be truly taken in and savored at 99mph. It will be but a blur. I want to devour the goodness and embrace the bad.

  3. Jeanette and Wonderchris- Definitely a really important caveat to the 'yes' philosophy is saying NO! I like to think of my day as a bank account, if you say yes to everything, then you'll go broke! Spend your yes time wisely :)

  4. I am really takeing this time to act out the kind of person I see myself as.Speaking slowly so that I say what I mean, and goes hand in hand with who I want to become.

I LOVE and adore Mumford and Sons. Had the pleasure of seeing them in LA last year and they are stellar! That line you picked out for your blog is one of my favorite and have sort of become my little motto as well. one we can all dwell more on.

  7. Gorgeous post and wonderful thoughts. I agree that every day is an opportunity to examine your life and ensure you're prioritizing the things that are important to you - honestly, it's one of the primary reasons I blog. It has become a sort of gratitude journal for me.

Love Mumford & Sons too, but then I guess who doesn't now?

  8. Beautiful post!
AND I love your new layout!!
Yesterday was a tough day for me.... usually I don't mind being single but I had a bad heart break this past year and it was not a day for me yesterday.
But I too am stronger and looking for a wonderful future :)

  9. Good for you girl. This is the way to do it and think it and live it. A period of catharsis is good for the soul - prep for what's coming next. Woot!

Loved the quote too. Reminds me of one of my faves: Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

    xoxo,

  11. I am loving your posts, your words and thoughts. And you are truely right about sitting down and the need to reflect what we want in our lives and what we don't want. Live is too precious and short to bother will all the "white noise" and things we don't care about!
    Have a wonderful day! Kristina

I know your split was so difficult (big hug to you) but there is a part of you that has changed for the better that comes through in your writing.

  17. tash, you have no idea how much i adore your post. i didn't know you were single--um-hm, me too...that said, valentine's day was a good one--not in the get up and go on a glamorous date kind of way, but because i took care of myself...ok, indulged a bit, nothing too self-destructive. i hope as i move back to l.a. we can meet up sometime and be friends :)

  20. Tash, this is so beautifully written. I was single for Valentine's Day as well (my boyfriend and I broke up right before the new year) and I was worried I would be really down too. But I just focused on all the wonderful things I have in my life, went out to a sushi dinner with some girlfriends, and nibbled on some chocolate while watching The Young Victoria. It was wonderful. And I can't wait to see what you do with this new weekly series!
