new beginnings

view of my neighborhood

Moving house is not for the faint hearted... and the longer you've been there, the harder it is to let go.  But with all the chaos, organizing and sorting comes the opportunity for new beginnings and the chance to truly evaluate what you're carrying with you in your most intimate space.  When you're a sentimental person like me,  it's easy to end up justifying what you hold on to, so you end up carrying things with you that you never spend any time with, in fact even forget about until you move again!  Although emotionally taxing, it's always a great time to truly sit with those items and be honest with yourself, "Why am I holding onto this"? And if I choose to, "how can I make this more than just storage?" The hardest part is when you know it no longer serves a purpose and it calls for you to let go... Or alternatively you could end up ignoring all of it and end up appearing on the latest season of this show. :) - believe me I've thought about it!

However it's not just the physical stuff I'm talking about, it's also the emotional stuff that ends up collecting in your home.  Patterns, habits, ways in which you interact with your life within these walls - what do you want to leave behind in that regard and what do you want to bring with you?

With my move in date just around the corner I'm suddenly yearning for new sheets, new pillows, tables and chairs, a whole new revamp on my taste and style.  If only I had the pocket book to match my new found inspiration! I thought I'd share with you some of the things I'm swooooning over! :)

nothing like a tree stump side table to add some organic earthiness to your space

I love this chunky heather gray pebble rug against almost any wooden floorboard; be it beach wood, white washed or dark wood.

There's nothing like sheer window treatments to add an element of easy breezy living.  If you live in colder climates it will definitely not be as economical during those winter months but in moderate temperatures? Yes please!

Can you believe all of this came from West Elm?! You guys have outdone yourselves!

  1. Oh, I love all of this! And yes, it's so true. Moving forces evaluation and fresh starts externally and internally.

I love you, beautiful friend! So excited for you!

P.S. - West Elm, all?! WOW.

  5. Love all of these, especially that stump side table. I love the look of rustic elements in minimalist spaces. I can relate to the hoarder syndrome and the way one always tries to reevaluate it all when moving. The past four years have had me in living limbo, first living out of boxes in my house and now living in temporary conditions with hardly any boxes at all. It makes you realize just how little you need in life to get by, but it doesn't make getting rid of the things you're attached to for sentimental reasons any easier.

  6. I like moving for the same reasons as you ... but hate it while I am "anticipating" the move - Packing and Unpacking suck a lot of energy out ... but it also brings new energy in the end. So I guess ... what I am saying is that it all works out in the end.

And that is some seriously gorgeous stuff you have got for your new home!!!

  7. I find moving always so hard but as you say, it's hard to say good-bye to things but it's a way to get a new start with others. xx

  8. If there was just one thing I could change about my home, it would be the window treatments, and those gorgeous airy curtains would be just the thing. We have very practical and supremely ugly blinds, but I'm not sure how my landlord would feel if I ripped them out of the walls and started fresh!

  10. Love the gray rug and the wood stump for a table! I have a table I use as an end table in my living room and the legs are made of wood and the top is marble. I love it. I like anything eclectic.. the juxtaposition of modern and rustic. :)

  15. beautiful finds!! and i know what you mean about moving. I'm a sentimental pack rat myself, which makes moving and packing hard for me. I tend to dread it and put it off until the last moment possible :)

  17. I love moving! I like very much of the packing and sorting things, to see what we dont need and what we could buy for the new flat! It's exciting and means that there is new things ahead in this life :)

I made my biggest move 1,5years ago, when I needed to pack my life in boxes, store most of these to my parents house and I left Finland to live in France! I took forever to bring everything I wanted to this new home, but I couldn't be more happy :)

I love the pillows, rugs and all you posted! I need to get some fall fabrics and get sewing new things.

  18. moving is one of the hardest, most exciting and tear filled things I've done but its comforting to know that others experience it too. although it totally would be much easier if we could all do it together over wine (at least that would make the packing a bit easier!)

  21. I loove your style picks. And, when I moved to Switzerland - we could only take a few boxes and we moved from a HOUSE. It was so difficult watching all of the furniture that I had chosen only 4 years ago prance out the door with new owners...talk about letting go. whoa.

  23. I completely know how you feel. Sometimes I miss my old house in Oklahoma so much it hurts. Letting go isn't all its cracked up to be. :]
