it's magic!

Jeanne Lavin 1907
With Halloween literally around the corner, it has me thinking of all things magical and cooking and baking to me is exactly that.  There's something so exciting about being surrounded by 1000's of recipes that have travelled the world and have been lovingly perfected over generations.

Nigella Lawson in her personal library {my dream}
The sound and smell of something bubbling away on the stove or in the oven is like a spellbinding concoction that can alter moods and turn strangers into friends.  Especially if you're using an old family recipe, it's like being immediately transported to another time with an old loved one. Call me crazy but I truly believe cooking is magic!

When I saw pictures of Jeanne Lanvin's private collection in Paris, I immediately understood what her magic was - fashion.
Her personal library filled with sketches and pictures from her collections are covered in hand crocheted book covers and photo albums.
If you could have one room filled with things that inspire you, what would it be? What's your magic?

  1. Oh goodness, I have a major weakness for anything Lanvin so this definitely hit a sweet spot. I adore how she hand hand-crocheted bookcovers! (And they're so sweet and beautifully embroidered, like her fashion designs). Sigh, I love cooking and books and would love some fantastical kitchen-library room, with things bubbling away and ancient cookbooks all askew (that sounds dangerously Harry Potter-ish!)

  2. How incredible! Nigella Lawson's library makes me swoon, and while I'd like a good collection of cookbooks, I think I'd really fill that room with music history books! I know I'm letting my geek flag fly, but I can't wait to start my PhD!

  3. omg, what a cool post. I love how the beauty of the books is tied into fashion and how the captured her musings. I love this line especially: The sound and smell of something bubbling away on the stove or in the oven is like a spellbinding concoction that can alter moods and turn strangers into friends.. I believe that too. I don't know what I would use to inspire me in a room... I can think of a lot of little things.

  4. That Lanvin is so cool! And honestly, you know what I adore? Scents, like candles and perfumes and such. That's kind of my magic. XX!

  8. Love this post!! Those photos are gorgeous!! My magic is baking and reading/writing. I would love a huge, state of the art kitchen, with double ovens and a shiny new Kitchen Aid mixer! Or a fabulous library with shelves on three walls and a fourth of all windows overlooking the ocean. ...someday!

  9. this post has stolen my heart. a room full of books! that alone is magic for me. but my one wish would have a library of love and adventure stories - because those are created by imagination, dreams and a little magic of their own.

  16. I agree with you - cooking and baking is magic! Every time I bake, and it turns out, I'm amazed.
    I also find developing film and printing images, "the old fashioned way", is pure magic as well.
    Have a lovely weekend!
